KAIROS was first held at ASMP in 1987. This was the second institution in Georgia to start a KAIROS program. It is now the oldest program in Georgia because the program at Stone Mountain, GA was discontinued when the facility changed its security level. AUGUSTA STATE MEDICAL PRISON is located in Grovetown, GA, near the Fort Gordon military reservation. It was opened in 1983 and constructed to house 1126 male residents in maximum security. ASMP provides centralized acute and specialized medical services and mental health services for male inmates, primarily as transients or outpatients.
The facility consists of four living units that are divided into two separate units. Each has a support building that contains a multipurpose room and a counseling office. One open dorm consisting of 384 beds with 192 beds designated for assisted living. Seven nursing units having a security control room and single patient rooms.
The warden is Dennis Brown who has been at the facility since January 1, 2010.
